Breast cancer is a collection of abnormal cells in the breast tissue that grow in an uncontrolled way.
There are several types of breast cancer, depending on where the cancer is located within the breast, or if it has spread to an area outside the breast.
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the name for abnormal changes in the cells within the milk ducts of the breast. DCIS is not life-threatening, but it may develop into invasive breast cancer if not treated. Early invasive breast cancer has spread from the milk ducts and/or lobules to surrounding breast tissue.3807

Why is early detection of breast cancer so important?
The best time to treat breast cancer is when it is still very small and has not spread to other parts of the body. When breast cancer is found early, treatment is often less invasive, survival rates are better, and women can get back to their normal lives more quickly.1536
A breast screen (mammogram) can find cancers as small as a grain of rice, before you or your doctor notice any changes in your breasts. For women aged 50–74, a regular breast screen is the best way to find cancer early.1550
